I discovered the animated movies from Studio Ghibli by accident, since I was assigned to Japan as a missionary and couldn’t avoid noticing them there. If you haven’t seen any of them (the most famous ones are Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away) - they are animated movies from Japan but they are hard to lump in with the rest of the ‘anime’ genre, if that term turns you off.
